Smoke and heat detectors are installed in various locations throughout the building to detect smoke and heat, respectively. The control panel is located in a central location and receives signals from the smoke and heat detectors. When signs of a fire are detected, a signal to the control panel is sent. The control panel then sounds an alarm to alert people in the building of the fire.
There are 2 main types of fire alarm systems: conventional and addressable. Conventional systems have a single control panel to receive signals from the smoke and heat detectors. Addressable systems have a separate control panel for each detector. This allows the control panel to identify the detector that has activated, helping identify the location of the fire.
Fire alarm installations should exclusively be carried out by a qualified professional.
